Taxis and Ride-Sharing Services
Before you travel
Find out which taxi and ride-sharing companies are approved for use. In some countries, IFRC does allow staff to use taxis or ride-sharing services so find out before you travel.
Choosing a taxi
Ask around – what is a typical price and tip?
Find a taxi stand - usually only authorized taxis will use it.
Pick your taxi, don’t let them pick you. Don’t accept rides from taxi drivers who approach you inside the airport, bus or train station.
Look for similarities - does it look like the other taxis? Look for the driver’s photo, license, taxi meter and radio – is it a professional operation?
Do not use shared taxis. You should pay for sole use of the vehicle, even if it’s a bit more expensive.
Agree on price (or price range) before you get in.
Know where you are going – ask the driver to show you the route on a map or app. Tracking your route on a phone app is an easy way to see if you’re going in the right direction.
Know who to call if you feel unsafe. If in doubt call and stay on the phone until you arrive.
Take a picture of the driver’s photo and license, and text it to your manager or a co-worker.
Check that your luggage is on board before getting into the taxi.
Sit in the back on the passenger side – this gives you the best view of the driver.
Check that there are interior door handles before you close your door.
Wear a seatbelt, even if they are not mandatory.
Keep the windows closed to avoid having your phone or valuables snatched by passing thieves.
Extra Tips for Ubers
While ride-hailing services, like Uber, do not necessarily pose a greater risk than other taxi services, there are some extra safety measures to consider:
Wait in a safe place. Minimize the time you are waiting outside; stay inside until your driver arrives.
Confirm it’s your ride. Make sure you are getting into the right car. Match the car license, make and model, and driver photo with your app info. Ask the driver to confirm your name before you get in.
Avoid riding alone. If you can share a ride with a friend, do it. There is safety in numbers.
