EXPLOSIONS

WATCH THIS WITH SOUND ON

Explosions are a risk in some areas where we work, particularly in conflict areas.

Explosions take many forms. They include aerial bombs and explosive devices placed near high-profile targets such as security forces sites and government buildings, or more public places such as political gatherings, places of worship and tourist areas.

A common tactic is to plant multiple bombs to explode on delay. The first explosion creates casualties, while the secondary targets first responders and onlookers.

In all cases, if there is one explosion, assume there will be more! Always take cover and stay away from windows!

WHAT TO DO

If you are in a vehicle…

  • Move away from the blast area.

  • If it is not safe to drive away, stop and find better cover.

  • If you are a first responder, do not rush in; seek appropriate permissions.

WHAT TO DO

If you are walking or outside…

  • Drop to the ground and lie flat – most blast debris and shrapnel fly upwards.

  • Take cover in a ditch or behind a wall.

  • Leave the area as quickly as possible.

WHAT TO DO

If you are in a building

  • Drop to the floor. Take cover under a table.

  • Move to an inner room or a corridor that’s better protected.

  • Stay away from windows. Most explosion-related injuries and deaths are due to flying glass

REMEMBER!

if there is one explosion, assume there will be more!

Always take cover and stay away from windows!
