SHOOTINGS

While we are not usually the target, we do occasionally get caught in the crossfire in high-crime and conflict areas.

First responders, such as ambulance workers and first aid volunteers, tend to be at a much higher risk.

WHAT TO DO

If you are walking and hear gunfire

Drop to the ground.

Look for a safe place to get cover, such as a ditch or wall. The safest place is one that offers you protection from bullets and is out of the shooter’s view.

Stay low and move quickly away from the line of fire.

Stay under cover until the shooting stops.

Once it is safe to do so, check on teammates and inform your supervisor or security officer.

WHAT TO DO

If you are in a vehicle and hear gunfire

  • Try to determine where the shots are coming from.

  • If you are sufficiently far away, it may be best to drive away quickly.

  • If you are close to the shooters, it may be best to get out of the car and find cover. Reversing or turning around can make you an easier target.

  • If you think the attackers are trying to kill you, your best option may be to drive away quickly. This is risky.

WHAT TO DO

If there is gunfire outside your building

The biggest risk is bullets coming through the walls or windows.

  • Find a place with more walls between you and the gunfire, such as an inner room, corridor or staircase.

  • Stay in the middle of the room, away from windows.

  • Lock the door.

  • Alert others by phone.

ACTIVE SHOOTER

Active shooter is a term used to describe a person(s) targeting victims indiscriminately and on a large scale.

Active shooters intend to kill as many people as possible.

Do not try to reason with them – they DO NOT negotiate.

Remember: run, hide, tell:

  • Run – Leave the area immediately. Take cover as you run. Help others escape if you can.

  • Hide – Lock yourself in a safe area. Barricade the door. Silence your phone. Keep away from doors and windows. Be prepared to fight as a last resort.

  • Tell – Alert authorities and others.
