AVIATION SAFETY

Is air or land travel safest?

Given that vehicle accidents account for a substantial number of security incidents, it can be safer to travel by air than driving many hours in areas with poor road conditions, poor traffic law enforcement or high crime.

However, air travel should be based on a risk assessment that takes into account factors such as the airlines’ safety ratings and the country's regulatory oversight.

Who can assess airline safety?

Airline safety is challenging to assess because many external factors come into play such as the condition of the aviation infrastructure, regulatory oversight and geographical contexts.

The IFRC Global Security Unit provides air safety assessment of air carriers upon request for those under IFRC security management responsibility.
