BOAT SAFETY
In some operations, we use boats ranging from small inflatables to large rescue ships. At a minimum, the team leader must ensure the following is in place:
All personnel have a life jackets.
The boat helmsman and/or captain is qualified to pilot the vessel.
The boat has an appropriate certificate for use.
There is suitable safety equipment on board such as fire extinguishers, flotation devices, communications equipment, flares, spare fuel and a first-aid kit.
For longer trips, carry emergency food and water.
The trip is monitored by a manager, radio room or security officer.
The IFRC Global Security Unit has developed additional guidelines for working on large rescue ships, which are available on request.
